FOOTBALL: 90 MINUTES OR ACTUALLY 60 MINUTES

Football lawmakers are considering shortening matches to just 60 minutes… but that will actually mean MORE game-time.

Arsenal led the league in time actually spent playing at 58.1 minutes per game, while Crystal Palace were last on 52.33mins.

FOOTBALL could be set to see all matches incredibly shortened by half an hour – but fans will actually get to see more action.

The International Football Association Board (Ifab) are considering the revolutionary move, much to supporters’ disappointment.

After all, the idea of losing a whole THIRD of a game, every game, is upsetting.

However, the proposed rule – which would see the clock stop at every break in play – would mean MORE football, at least where the Premier League is concerned.

Based on current laws, each game is 90-minutes long, with the clock never stopping and officials looking to make up for that fact with added time.

Yet no club in the English top flight last season averaged more than 58.1 minutes of playing-time per game in 2016-17.

Arsenal topped the league with an average "ball in play" time of 58.1 minutes per game, followed by champions Chelsea on 57.76 minutes.

Therefore, if the game-length is shortened but the clock regularly stopped, it will allow for a much more efficient game - and we'll actually see an extra few minutes of football per game.

In some teams' case, there will be a LOT more action per match.

After all, Crystal Palace only averaged 52.33 minutes of "ball in play" action in 2016-17, with Watford not much better off on 53.25 minutes.

Check out the full list of how many minutes your Premier League team played on average per match ahead of the potential rule change, above.
