GRADUATES BEWARE OF YOUR SPELLINGS

STAKEHOLDER CAUTIONS AGAINST WRONG SPELLINGS ON SOCIAL MEDIA

"Dear NYSC corps members, please check your sentences and spellings before posting stuff on social media, so as not to keep disgracing other Nigerian graduates".

The National Association of Erstwhile Corps Members issued this advice today after taking a cursory look at the numerous blunders being posted on social media by people in NYSC uniform.

The National President of the Association, Comrade Abdulwahab Hezekiah, said the wanton manner in which grammatical anomalies are being gleefully displayed on social media by people who are supposed to have passed through the four walls of universities, polytechnics, colleges of education, and other higher institutions butt at home and abroad, has become worrisome and is assuming a national epidemic.

He said this may be a reflection of the quality of graduates being churned out by the various institutions. "It is no longer news that we have many graduates who can't speak comprehensible English and who also can't write compound sentences", he added.

Mr Abdulwahab Hezekiah said many Nigerian graduates boast of beautiful results but fail job interviews frequently because they can't express themselves well in English Language. He called on the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, to declare a state of emergency on tertiary education in Nigeria so that this anomaly can be addressed to stem the tide in the decline of higher education in Nigeria.

He also discouraged graduates from engaging in unnecessary abbreviations when communicating on social media. He said apart from twitter, almost all other social media apps do not have character limitations, thereby making it unnecessary to abbreviate almost every word. He added that continuous overt abbreviations could make people forget the correct spellings of words.

The National President said graduates and even non-graduates alike should desist from blaming auto-correct for their errors. He advised that people should always proofread their posts before hitting the "share" or "send" key.

He said many graduates these days hide their lack of adequate command of English Language by always speaking Pidgin English or vernacular. While he didn't outrightly condemn these languages, he added that constant speaking of English will make the speaker inch towards perfection in the long run.

Mr Hezekiah also said potential employers these days always check the social media posts of potential employees even before the final interview, and if such uncommon spelling errors are found, the candidate is summarily dropped without any explanation.
