ASSURANCE, ROYAL WEDDING AND A DEMON

by Bayo Oyenuga

I was really young when I saw Tolu Ogunleye 's mum watch Princess Diana's wedding. I couldn't understand why Aunt was so excited to see this lady in a ridiculous flowing gown. I saw the same look last Saturday, everywhere I went, even the most weather beaten Lagos touts looked on with admiration.

Having lived in England in the past, describing Prince Harry did as 'breaking with protocol' has to be a gross understatement. In England there is class distinction. This distinction has always existed right from the colonial era. The English only sent their best out to the world to govern new colonies while the regular people remained back home. Breaking into the upper English society requires more than money, it's imbibing a certain culture and members of this class guard the gates quite viciously.

There is a law called the one drop rule. This states that if you have one drop of blood of another race you are not white. That's why although Meghan has some Caucasian features she is seen as black. Harry married a black woman, period. You see the slave trade really set us back as a race. We were dehumanized and it will still take alot of time for the effects to wear off completely.

If you've dated someone of another race and you have had to deal with disapproving looks, you will understand a tad of what this couple are dealing with and will continue to deal with. Their children will have to deal with it. They will be slandered and the marriage will be put under strain but there comes a time when a man has to be a man. Harry did not try to hide Meg's blackness by whitewashing the ceremony. In his using a black choir and preacher he sent a silent message: I am marrying a black woman, deal with it. The way you treat your partner is the way your family will. His family have no option but to call in line.

In Nigeria those in intestinal marriages face some level of issues. Some people disapprove of Davido's Chioma because he is Yoruba and she is Igbo. Love can be found anywhere, it is not based on ethnicity, it is about two souls connecting. Protect and celebrate your chosen one, celebrate them. Have a wedding that celebrates your diversity, give them assurance. There is beauty in
the mix of cultures. Be open to learn about each other's cultures. There is beauty in diversity.
