THROWBACK: How influenza killed 500,000 out of 18 million Nigerians in 1918

Image
The 1918 influenza pandemic was the most severe pandemic in recent history. It was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian origin. Although there is no universal consensus regarding where the virus originated, it spread worldwide between 1918-1919. It is estimated that about 500 million people or one-third of the world’s population became infected with this virus. The number of deaths was estimated to be at least  50 million worldwide  according to the CDC. About 500,000 Nigerians, out of a population of 18million, died in less than 6 months, and  between 50 and 80% of the population was  stricken . The over-crowded urban centers (Yorubaland)  were the hardest hit and, even though the pandemic declined almost as suddenly as it began, morbidity, mortality, and panic adversely affected the productive capacity of the country. The Influenza officially hit Lagos on 14 September 1918 (Public Record Office, London) The 1st case in Lagos was confirm...

DAVID KING OPTS FOR VIRTUAL LAUNCH OF WHISPERING PALMS

Image
Dear all, it is with the deepest sadness in my heart, pain in my kidney, agony in my pancreas, tears in my eyes, and anguish in my liver that I write to inform you that the planned launch and concert of my book titled "Whispering Palms" has been postponed due to the prevailing circumstances occasioned by the coronavirus pandemic. A lot of work and resources had already gone into the planning and logistics for this event but God knows why. The culmination of this project which has taken six years to complete was supposed to have been sweeter than this but alas, here we are. However, a VIRTUAL LAUNCH of the book will still happen on the 29th of March. This is how it will happen. We will NOT be gathering at the venue but we will launch the book ONLINE and you can choose to pay online and have your copies delivered to you. At your request, an account number will be sent to you by DM and you can support us as God has put it in your heart, and then a means will b...

JOS TWITTER HANGOUT BROUHAHA

Image
Jos Twitter I have been keenly following the Twitter Hangouts discussion on twitter and I can't help but be amazed at how much furor, bad blood, and sectionalization going on here. Twitter is supposed to be a connector and not a disconnector. Let's quit the verbal fisticuffs. For the avoidance of doubt, let me quickly inform us that I am not a member of any of the Twitter Hangouts. I have never been invited by any of them and I can't beg to be invited. So I can count myself as an outsider looking in and trying to give an unbiased opinion. While many here are shamelessly struggling to be administrators of WhatsApp groups or Twitter hangout groups, our mates (and even juniors) around the world are patenting their inventions, developing apps, discovering new mathematical formulas and smiling to the banks. Where did my generation get it wrong? I think for so long we have become too accustomed to mediocrity and lack of self worth. Why should we have more t...

GENTLEMAN'S CODE 102

Image
David King Being a gentleman is difficult, if we really want to do the right thing. But there's no other way to go than doing the right thing. This is the second in the series of Gentlemen's Code. 1. Embrace colognes. The way a man smells tells a lot about his personality. Your personality is your subtle pride. And make sure your cologne is not too loud. Men don't wear loud scents. 2. When climbing a staircase, take the steps one at a time. Never fall for the temptation of jumping double time. This only means that you should arrive your venues on time. 3. When driving in traffic, do not engage in road rage. Insulting other drivers only makes you appear abnormal and mentally unstable. 4. Never spit in public. Be it through the car window or into the gutter, spitting in public is unethical. If you must spit, do it privately and neatly. A serviette or handkerchief will make it less messy. 5. If you have cattarh or runny nose, go everywhere with a handkerchi...

50 KNOCKING?

Image
By the time I turn 50, by the grace of Almighty God, I want to be the funkiest, hippest, happiest, most swaggerlicious 50-year-old ever. I'm already working on it. There shall be no pot belly, no scraggly beard or bushy hair, no wearing of lace all day with Yoruba cap, no chewing of tobacco, and no calling of my wife Mama Serena. I won't sit on my butt scolding the government for not doing this or not doing that. I will be the change I want to see. I won't form sugar daddy for any small girl but I will encourage them to rise above their limitations and be what they want to be with a view to changing the narratives surrounding their peculiar vulnerabilities. I won't do side-chicks because my main chick would be more than trendy enough for me because I won't deform her by stressing with too much childbearing. 2 is enough, I don't want a football team. I won't go out to eat nkwobi and isiewu with my guys while my family remains at home eating tuwo t...

JOS CARNIVAL 2019: A SEED SPROUTING AND FLOURISHING

Image
JOS CARNIVAL 2019: A SEED SPROUTING AND FLOURISHING Governor Simon Lalong in procession When the Jos Carnival idea was originally conceived in 2016 and tabled before relevant stakeholders and potential sponsors and partners, many thought it was just another idea that will fizzle away like many other noble ideas that were embedded in files and allowed to gather dust and later to be eaten by termites and worms! But thankfully, the Plateau State Government under the able leadership of the captain of the Rescue Administration - Rt. Hon. Dr. Simon Bako Lalong and other stakeholders embraced it and decided to give it a shot. The first edition in the Easter of 2017 with the theme: Glamour and Limitless Possibilities was received with mass applause and widespread acceptance. Governor Simon Lalong In planning for the second edition in 2018, the Jos Carnival Central Planning Committee decided to seek more knowledge from those who had dived into the carnival pond and decided to...
